The Cosby Show and Golden Girls were up on the docket today! What a delightful way to start a Monday. Max showed us the importance of laugh tracks and 80’s action television shows such as Miami Vice. It was probably one of the better ways to spend a Monday morning with the variety of all the examples Max had for us on this day. The best was when he threw on the Soprano’s, because i’ve never watched a single episode before. It was good for me because i thought the show was way different. I learnt more manipulation in film, and how the director can try and swoon you for the bad guy by simply showing a soft side to him, contrasting his violent behaviour, and how dialogue is used and analyzed in certain situation. For example the therapist implying that she won’t go to authorities and can trust her with telling him “most” things.
Thursday Dec 12 @ 12:29amCOMING NEAR THE END.
Final assignment chats. Who would’ve thought it would come so soon. We have the option of doing a video this year, which i am totally going to choose for my final. Documentary on the Hill family. What up. Max gave us the whats up on summary and scene and what the difference is, as well as discuss with us interactive story telling. (interactive i.e. video games.) Watching the Fallout 3 example probably made my day. Watching this man having to decide to saw off the tip of his finger so he could find the next clue? Meanwhile his next clue was under the table and if only he had simply looked under the table, his happiness would’ve been cut out for him.
Figuratively speaking of course.
We then did an in class activity as we presented our ideas to the class, and then watched a few more examples, and then head out the door.
Thursday Dec 12 @ 12:23amso ON THIS DAY. Max engaged our brains into the wonderful world of interactive story telling. We learnt that games can engage players emotionally by embedding the lower of a story within interactive design. Especially the core gam play design in a video game. It is hard for writing stories for video games. The bigger the video world, the weaker the story usually is. However, it is only recently that companies have hired script writers actually trained specifically for video games. Companies have gotten better at masking and putting the story together, giving gamers the illusion of freedom, but in the end, the story always snaps back to the next point on the linear scale. (The rubber band theory). Early games were also a attempting to mimic film. Through this gaming, it is possible our brains have been affected by this with our memory, but we’ve learned to process so many images so quick to older people, they might have a seizure.
Fact. Wanna know how a formula to make a story?
_________ wants __________
but _________
so _________ .
Thursday Dec 12 @ 12:16amFact. When interviewing, avoid one word responses and music is pretty key. It keeps the viewers attention. Reconstructions can be used in documentaries. By doing this, you can get better footage, angles, and sound for a better impact on the audience. For the in class exercising, we thought up ten questions that would best acquire knowledge of someone’s past. Which is where the one word response was a negatory. Max then went on to show us that the montage, exposition, and mockumentary styles are types of documentary. And if we are looking to be comedic, we should take fictional events in the guise of documentary. Which is probably why he then led us into watching the office.
Thursday Dec 12 @ 12:09amWe started off class with a wonderful in class activity. This activity consisted of any locations we had in mind to shoot a video or make a short. Because you should always aim to shoot a video with the locations already in place. Shoot for your location, not your idea. This calls for a better video. We then watched a Beauty Day trailer which is inspiring me to go see it, it looks pretty intriguing. We then watched some low budget films, and show we should write after knowing the resources we had.
DOCUMENTARY TECHNIQUES:
Actuality - Real life events and places
Voice Over - commentary by film maker
Interviews - People being filmed to speak directly about events.
Fact. Anyone who owns a cellular phone with a camera is capable of documenting.
